RTI Application
An RTI application is a request for information under the Right to Information Act, 2005. The RTI Act is a law that empowers the citizens of India to access information held by the public authorities, such as the central and state governments, local bodies, and other institutions. The RTI Act aims to promote transparency and accountability in the functioning of the public authorities, and to protect the rights and interests of the citizens.
An RTI application can be filed by any citizen of India who wants to obtain information on any matter of public interest or concern. The information can be related to the policies, decisions, actions, expenditures, or performance of the public authorities, or any other issue that affects the rights or welfare of the citizens. An RTI application can also be used to seek the reasons for any administrative or quasi-judicial decision taken by the public authorities.
An RTI application can be filed online or offline, depending on the mode of filing available for the public authority concerned. To file an RTI application online, one has to visit the RTI Online Portal and select the ministry, department, or apex body from which the information is sought. Then, one has to fill up the online RTI request form with the personal details, contact information, and the particulars of the information required. After submitting the RTI application, one can view the status of the request and receive the reply online.
To file an RTI application offline, one has to write a letter or an application addressed to the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the public authority from which the information is sought. The letter or application should contain the name, address, and contact details of the applicant, and the particulars of the information required. The letter or application should also be accompanied by the required fee in the form of cash, demand draft, postal order, or bank cheque. The fee can also be paid through electronic means, if available. The letter or application should be sent by post or delivered by hand to the PIO. After receiving the RTI application, the PIO has to reply within 30 days, or 48 hours in case of life or liberty of a person.
An RTI application is a powerful tool for the citizens to exercise their right to information and to participate in the democratic process. An RTI application can help to expose corruption, inefficiency, or injustice in the public authorities, and to demand accountability and redressal. An RTI application can also help to improve the quality and delivery of public services, and to safeguard the rights and interests of the citizens.
